Apogee Enterrises is expected to reduce the company’s workforce by approximately 400 employees. The automotive manufacturing company is cutting 1800 jobs at its Windsor auto assembly plant. Formerly known as Fiat Chrysler the company has cited microchip shortage that has impacted not just the auto industry, but other industries as well, for the job cuts. The company said it would transition the Windsor Assembly Plant from two shifts to one. GoStudent, Europe’s first edtech unicorn, is laying off 200 employees — about 10% of its workforce. The Vienna-based startup is backed by investment giants like SoftBank, Coatue and Tencent.
The company will lay off around 220 employees after restructuring the company and discontinuing its consumer care and electronics film programs. Better.com, the SoftBank-backed mortgage startup, is laying off roughly 10 percent of its workforce today, or about 900 people in the U.S. and India. QVC will terminate the employment of more than 1,900 employees who worked in their Rocky Mount warehouse. The company will be closing and ceasing all operations at this facility as it was damaged by a huge fire in December. Canada’s No. 1 movie theater chain, Cineplex, has temporarily laid off 5000 part-time workers given Ontario’s recent decision to close cinemas amid the Omicron surge. The temporary closures of cinemas in Ontario are expected to last until Jan. 28.

The layoffs were part of the restructuring to cut costs amid an impending slowdown in venture funding and tightening of the overall economic environment. Ford Motor is laying off its salaried and contract employees and about 580 staff are affected.
The company will make every effort to place laid-off hourly employees in open full-time positions as they become available based on seniority. Spain’s largest telco, Telefónica, is set to lay off 2700 workers as part of a job redundancy plan aimed at reducing costs. These job cuts are following the drop in revenues due to tough market competition. Peloton will lay off about 2,800 employees, including about 20% of its corporate positions to help reinvigorate the flailing fitness company. The company is also reducing the number of warehouses it owns and operates, and expanding delivery agreements with third-party providers, which will help the company save $800 million in annual costs.

The changes would help the bank create €1.4 billion ($1.7 billion) in annual savings by 2024. The supermarket giant Asda, is planning to axe up to 1,200 staff in a shake-up of its in-store bakeries after a fall in demand for traditional loaves of bread.
The company is encouraging laid-off employees to apply for open positions within the company. Clear, the India-based fintech SaaS platform has joined the list of startups resorting to downsizing amid a decline in funding this year. The Kora Capital-backed startup laid off 200 employees, around 20% of its workforce across departments, including tech, product, sales, support team among others. Hard drive maker Seagate Technology plans to cut 8% of its global workforce, or about 3,000 employees, citing economic uncertainty and declining demand for its parts. German automotive supplier Schaeffler plans to cut 1,300 jobs, or 1.6% of its global workforce, as the sector grapples with the shift from combustion engines to electric vehicles. The workforce reductions come as the online used-car retailer faces economic slowdown and an uncertain future.

It’s the latest signal that companies across tech, many of which grew significantly over the early stages of the pandemic, are cutting back on staff growth as economic uncertainty looms. OhioHealth is eliminating 637 jobs, its biggest layoff ever, as part of a plan to drive improvements in patient care. Of the 637 jobs, 567 are in information technology, while the rest are in a unit called revenue cycle that handles such things as billing, coding and accounts receivable. Opel aims to cut up to 1,000 jobs in Germany, by the end of the year through partial retirement, early retirement or severance pay.
The company cites the rapid transformation of the industry, the pandemic, the geopolitical situation, fragile supply chains and massive energy and raw material price increases as the reason for lay offs. Nordstrom plans to cut 222 employees at a distribution center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, according to a WARN notice filed with the state. The distribution center is one of two supply chain facilities that Nordstrom operates in Iowa, which together amounts to 1.5 million square feet of space and are the retailer’s only facilities in the Midwest. International Distributions Services, the parent firm of the British Royal Mail, plans to lay off 10,000 jobs by next August, reason being ongoing strike action and rising losses at the business. The company will begin notifying workers of its plan, which includes up to 6,000 redundancies.

Hirect, a chat-based direct hiring platform for startups, has laid off 40% of its employees, in what the company termed an organizational restructuring and a strategic change in its business model. Bayada provides clinical care and support services in the home for children and adults. It is based in New Jersey and has more than 350 offices in 22 states and eight countries. The Calgary-based WestJet laid off 3,333 staff in a move aimed at streamlining its business, the latest such workforce reduction for the hugely impacted airline industry. With over 2,400 stores having re-opened, the business has been slow to return in some areas. The move has impacted around 10% of the entire workforce employed in wholly-owned Costa stores.
